2012 Annual Awards Banquet Invitation

Grace Van Der Byl – Fastest Starting From Catalina

Final Time of 7:27 Eclipses Karen Burton’s Effort From October 1994

The Catalina Channel Swimming Federation is thrilled to announce a new record has been established. Last Friday, Grace Van Der Byl (pictured at the 2011 CCSF Banquet) landed at the rocky point under Terranea Resort only 7 hours and 27 minutes after jumping in the Channel.

This is the fastest crossing for a swimmer starting at Catalina Island. Only Penny Lee Dean’s 1976 record — starting on the mainland — of 7hrs and 15min is faster. Grace’s swim is just the fourth Catalina Channel crossing to eclipse the 8-hour mark. She joins Penny Dean, Pete Huisveld and Karen Burton in this exclusive club. We’re aware that three “Sub-8” club members will be at the CCSF banquet next month. Perhaps all four can make the event — Now that will be a photo opportunity not to miss.

[editor update: We overlooked John York‘s frist leg of his 1978 double-crossing, where John swam in 7:41 and turned around to cross back in 9:01 — Yeah, it’s the fastest two-way swim. Confirmed for banquet attendance among the sub-8 hour group are John York, Grace Van Der Byl, Penny Lee Dean and Pete Huisveld]

Congratulations Grace. We look forward to celebrating, with your support team, your marvelous achievement at the Annual Awards Banquet.
